Greenethiquette is the result of Business & Decision's commitment to eco-friendly technologies. B&D aspires to work in cooperation with its clients towards developing and improving eco-friendly methods.
The initiative was created thanks to Business & Decision's implementation of a new eco-responsible data centre. Business & Decision is an international consultant, integrator and host of IT solutions. Remarking that standards and codes of conduct concerning eco-responsibility were aimed exclusively at providers and Data Centre managers, and ignored "consumers" of such services, Business & Decision launched an initiative to develop a code of conduct dedicated to the issue.
With Greenethiquette, a business which subcontracts any IT services agrees to ensure its service providers act towards reducing the environmental impact of their equipment. Adopting an eco-friendly policy will minimise negative effects on the environment.
Business & Decision's Greenethiquette policy is freely available to all companies using hosted services, under the conditions of the Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 UK: England & Wales jurisdiction.
The European Code of Conduct for Data Centres is an initiative led by the European Commission. The Code encourages hosted service providers to take voluntary action in agreeing to a set of guidelines aimed at eco-responsibility, and adopting a policy of transparency regarding energy output statistics. The main obligation to Greenethiquette is insisting that your service providers adhere to the guidelines of chief analyst organisations such as Gartner.
Climate Savers Computing is a non-profit organisation which regroups users and providers of IT solutions. The organisation was established to accompany the WWF's Climate Savers program, which, since 1999, has mobilised a number of companies to reduce carbon emissions. Climate Savers Computing participants (users or producers of information resources), can subscribe in order to limit their impact on the environment. As affiliated members, companies purchasing computers and IT equipment pledge to choose material with a minimum required level of environmental efficiency (consistent with Energy Star and 80 Plus guidelines.) The principal obligation of a business adopting Greenethiquette is ensuring that service providers, too, adhere to minimum energy-efficiency requirements.
